Harrisburg Urban Outreach Initiative

Project Description:
Adventure Camp
This initiative is a cooperative effort with the City of Harrisburg Parks and Recreation Department to provide urban youth with an opportunity to participate in educational and recreational activities in PA State Parks.

The initiative is composed of three(3) program components:

State Park
Adventure Camp
State Park Penn’s Adventurers' Camp Overnight Camping

FREE 5-day Camp for Youth ages 13 to 15

July 21 - 25, 2008
9:00 AM - 4:30 PM each day

Participant Capacity - 16

The program will be conducted at Kings Gap and other surrounding Region 3 Parks.

Focus: To introduce youth to the variety of recreational opportunities available at State Parks.

All activities with the exception of swimming will include a "how to" as well as an interpretive component. The program is free of charge and includes lunch, snacks, all necessary equipment and transportation.

FREE 4-day camp for Youth ages 9 to 12

June 24 - 27, 2008
8:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day

Participant Capacity - 12

The program will be conducted at Kings Gap and will part of a three-day Penn’s Adventurers Camp that will be open to area youth. The Harrisburg participants will have an extra day prior to the beginning of the regular camp to become familiar with Kings Gap and the staff.

Focus: Environmental learning activities with a few recreational components.

The program is free of charge and includes lunch, snacks, all necessary equipment and transportation.

FREE overnight camping experience for Youth ages 9 to 15

August 8, 2008
6:00 PM through August 10, noon at Kings Gap’s group tenting area

Participant + chaperone capacity - 30

Participants must have attended either the Adventure or Junior Naturalist Camp as a prerequisite for camping program.

The program is free of charge and includes lunch, snacks, all necessary equipment and transportation.

Harrisburg Park and Recreation Department will provide:

  • transportation to the camp locations
  • t-shirts for the participants
    • staff chaperones for the events:
    • Adventure Camp (2)
    • Penn’s Adventurers Camp (1)
    • Overnight Camping (to be determined)

Adventure CampKings Gap/State Parks will:

  • conduct pre-event parent meeting in Harrisburg for all events
  • provide programs and programming staff
  • provide food, beverages and all necessary equipment

Participants will provide:

  • a signed permission slip from parent or guardian
  • appropriate clothing and footwear for the activities
    (A list will be provided - no need to purchase any special equipment.)
