MARCH OF DIMES
RUBBER DUCK REGATTA

MARCH OF DIMES ANNUAL RUBBER DUCK REGATTA is scheduled
to take place at Kipona at 5:00 PM on Monday, September 1. Ducks will embark onto the water near the Mayor’s River Barge located on the Susquehanna River near Cranberry Street.

The 2008 March of Dimes "super duck" souvenir rubber duck can be purchased for a $5.00 donation and is accompanied with a raffle ticket, for your chance to win one of several great local prizes! Ducks and raffle tickets will be on sale throughout this summer at area businesses or by calling the March of Dimes at 717-545-4534. Ducks and raffle tickets will also be available during the Kipona Celebration at the March of Dimes booth in the "Community Forum."

At the Regatta, hundreds of floater ducks will be released to float downstream in a race to the finish! The winning ducks (numbered to correspond with the raffle tickets) will indicate the raffle winners. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the race.

DRAGON BOAT RACES

The Popular Asian and American Sport Returns To The Susquehanna - 2008 DRAGON BOAT RACES!

Sponsored by the Chinese Cultural and Arts Institute (CCAI) and the City of Harrisburg, time trials will begin at 8:30 AM with races scheduled to begin with a colorful opening ceremony on the Mayor’s Barge at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 30.

The races, sanctioned by United States Dragon Boat Federation, will continue throughout the day ending at approximately 6:00 PM. Winners will be announced and awards presented at 6:30 PM. This year’s races will involve approximately 20 teams racing colorful Hong Kong style Dragon Boats in the Susquehanna River from the M. Harvey Taylor Bridge at Forster St. to the Mayor’s River Barge located at Cranberry Street. Trophies will be awarded at the end of the competition.

Among the many teams competing in this year’s event will be the US National Champions from the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association.

KIPONA CANOE CLASSIC

To benefit Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg volunteer canoe and kayak skills instruction and safety education programs
Sponsored by the City of Harrisburg, Stephen R. Reed, Mayor

Registration All Day Saturday and Sunday, August 30 and 31, 2008 o Late Registration: 8 to 9AM on race day. First Race Starting Time: 10:00 AM, Mayor’s River Barge at Cranberry Street $5.00 per person registration fee o Entry is limited to 200 participants. Parent or guardian signature needed, if a racer is younger than 18.

The Dick Reese Kipona Canoe Races are a true measure of paddling skill with lots of fun thrown in as well! All canoe races will be run in identical canoes, using identical straight-shaft paddles.

WHY SHOULD I DO IT? Because it’s a whole lot of fun, you may win an award if you race well, you may win some cash if you race really, really well, and all proceeds are donated to the support local volunteer canoe and kayak instruction through the Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg, no matter how you race. All entrants will get a Dick Reese Kipona Canoe Races T-Shirt.

HOW FAR IS IT? All races are a 1/4 mile sprint with buoy turn starting and finishing at the Mayor’s River Barge (Cranberry Street). You will head upstream 1/8 mile, turn around a buoy, and then come back to the start line.

WILL I GET WET? Probably not. But just in case, the race sponsors will be providing safety boats for the race.

5th Annual 2008 BASS CLASSIC

Capital City Bassmasters is proud to present the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society 2008 Bass Classic at KIPONA sponsored by the City of Harrisburg. C.A.I. Computer Aid, Inc, at the 2008 Kipona on August 31st. The 2008 Bass Classic at KIPONA will launch form City Island, and will feature a first prize of $3,000 guaranteed.

“This is our 5th year for the tournament and has raised over $35,000 in the previous years for Leukemia and this year we hope is the best year yet. We hope to raise over $12,000, said Bob Herman, Public Relations Officer for Capital City Bassmasters.
