WHAT IS A POW-WOW?
A Pow-wow is a gathering of North America's indigenous people. It derives from the Narragansett word powwaw, meaning spiritual leader. It has since come to be used to describe any gathering of Native Americans of any tribe. Although Pow-wows have been held for hundreds of years, a twenty-first century Pow-wow is a specific type of event held by Native Americans for Native American and non-Native Americans alike, to meet, in one particular area to dance, sing, socialize, learn and venerate Native American tradition. This is the 11th year for the City Island Gathering of the People Spirit of the People Pow-wow. There are many tribes and nations represented at this Pow-wow with varying customs, clothing, music and dance styles.
